Xp end of support activation

With Windows XP support ending in April I have been trying to educate my customers that this date is coming and they really need to plan for a migration. As after that date all other vendors will stop supporting XP as well. My question is this what is becoming of Windows XP activation servers after this date. Or will the activation servers be off. There is little information on what is going to happen from Microsoft.

I was wondering if anybody on here knows?? I would be surprised if they dont allow some activations. Seeing as that on Technet they list most of their old OS's to download and install. Granted that XP was one of the first to require online activation. More and more business need to start making this migration now.

They are too scared for some strange reason. Still a ton of XP PCs out there. My only issue with Microsoft is this 2 year release circle for a new OS.

Windows 8 and especially the Metro interface is going to add a big learning curve. I will be running once the first beta comes out but other than that I don't see it being useful for our users unless you can make the Metro interface not run. As far as the activation required retail, I would not be surprised if they started failing on rebuilds.

I hadn't even thought about that. If they're not going to allow any more activations, that's probably an even bigger reason to migrate to 7 or 8 by then than the lack of security updates and other support. Granted, by , you should not be running XP anyway. But, there are those who cling on, I guess. It's not like you can't disable the new metro interface, much the same way you can disable the win7 interface.

I ask this since I have a user that has been burnt by MYOB accounting's activation server being switched off. It should be on a sticker on the side of your computer. When the window pops up saying activation will expire in x number of days click on it or get to the activation process window some other way.

One way I have noted is: Start bottom left , all programs, accessories, system tools, activate windows. If none of this works let me know and I'll go through the process enough to figure it out. I hesitate to do anything because I'm pretty sure I have it fixed and don't want to break what ain't broken. Once there, go through the process they provide and when it asks if you want to phone a friend or do the internet, click on the phone option.

Somewhere in this process it will ask you to enter your product key code that you got off a sticker on a computer. Enter this in the boxes. Call this number to get your new activation code. This one worked for me but an alternate number is When the computer answers follow the prompts. One question it will ask is if you have a smart phone.

If by chance you don't have one get one or borrow one. This makes it easy. Say yes. The automated system will ask to verify whatever it is they want verified by giving you a three digit number to enter in your phone. Do that. If all goes well hooray. Continue on. If not, it will give you another number. Enter it. I had to do this three times before it worked. I think I even had to hang up and call again.

But once this works you've got it made. Since you are on a smart phone it will ask if they can send a text with a link in it to complete the process. It will also say if you got the text and link you can hang up. Check for the text and link and if ok hang up. When complete it will confirm if it worked. If so, you're a happy camper. If not, let me know. You can email me direct if you like. It's more likely I will get your message right away. Hi, Ive just purchased the retail version of Windows XP, how long into the future will I get support for re-activation because of hardware failure or upgrading etc.

I have so many programs that I still use but will only run on Windows XP and I don't rate virtual PC software to ran older programs, also is it a wise idea to buy such an old OS, thanks. This thread is locked. They have promised to stop supporting the operating system in April of But Microsoft has assured me that they will continue to activate XP. The end of security updates is of some concern, but as I argued in When XP is Discontinued , the active malware threats of will probably not be targeting an old and out-of-date operating system.

Nevertheless, I highly recommend that XP diehards, assuming they can afford it, upgrade to Windows 7 this year.
