Windows 98 randomly freezes




















When I rebooted it boots to a black screen. What is the latest changes or additions to the PC? Anything uninstalled? Any files or folders deleted? To eleminate the video as a source without uninstalling the driver. This will changethe display to 16 colors just like booting to safe mode. If it still won't boot you can go back and undo the changes and the video will be back to original. Massive system slowdowns such as you have described, particularly when trying to fill in a form online such as posting to this forum, can be caused by the presence of CoolWebSearch. It's particularly nasty because neither Spybot nor AdAware can get rid of it.

You can get the removal tool, CWShredder and run it link to the download is near the bottom of the page , which will remove CoolWebSearch.

If that turned out to be the problem, be sure to go over to the Windows update site and download all the critical updates. Strangely, in ME or 98SE, hibernation was never a setting in the power menu only shut down, reboot, sleep were present.

Try using the PC outside the case for some time to see if the issue can hopefully not occur even without the front panel headers being involved. If I restart the computer it won't freeze for an hour or so, then it will start freezing again. This is after upgrading to window 10 from 8.
